Case Study: Jefferson Parish Parks & Recreation Leads the Way in the Sun Safety and Sustainability

In May 2022, Jefferson Parish — a suburb of New Orleans — partnered with Vital Signs Media Wellness Kiosks to make free public sunscreen accessible at parks and playgrounds throughout the parish. The goal was simple: promote health equity, sun protection, and environmental responsibility for local families enjoying outdoor spaces.

After a successful first year, the program was extended for two more years thanks to strong community response and measurable impact.

The Impact

Over the past year, the program delivered impressive results:

  • 40 parks identified for kiosk placement to expand sunscreen access parish-wide

  • 16,552 free sunscreen dispensations recorded

  • 1,379 people served each month on average

  • ~400 plastic bottles saved from single-use waste

Each eco-friendly sunscreen dispenser provides SPF 50 protection without plastic packaging or waste. The kiosks are battery-powered, low-maintenance, and designed for outdoor environments which makes it a sustainable solution for public health.

Health Equity Meets Environmental Action

By replacing single-use sunscreen packets and bottles with public sunscreen dispensers, Jefferson Parish is setting a new standard for municipalities nationwide.
The program not only helps residents stay safe under the Louisiana sun but also significantly reduces the amount of plastic waste generated in parks.

This balance of community wellness and sustainability reflects Jefferson Parish’s leadership in public health innovation.

Community Feedback

“SunStop truly is a win-win for our community and the environment.
They are making sunscreen more accessible in places people need it most, while also reducing the impact on the environment through eco-friendly kiosks and the elimination of sunscreen bottles.”
— Scott Walker, City Council President

Looking Ahead

With continued support from Jefferson Parish leadership and local sponsors, Vital Signs Media is expanding to reach more neighborhoods, playgrounds, and recreational facilities.
Each new kiosk represents another step toward a healthier, more sustainable community.
